Adoption and Termination of Parental Rights
Adoption is often called “adoption termination” because the rights of the biological parent must be terminated before another person can adopt a child. One of the most common circumstances of adoption termination occurs when a stepparent adopts a child for whom he or she already serves as a parent figure. In these cases, the biological parent is either missing, no longer involved in the child’s life, or unfit for other reasons.

There are two ways to terminate a biological parent’s rights:
Voluntary termination: The biological parent can voluntarily give up his or her rights by signing a consent form.
Involuntary termination: The rights of the parent can be terminated involuntarily in court based on specific grounds, such as failing to provide support or having any contact with the child for a period of at least six months.
